Pre-IV blood work is to ensure your safety and validate a safety screening.

We are passionate about providing safe and effective care at Silver Spruce. Pre-IV testing and screening ensures we are meeting both our professional and personal standards in terms of administering your treatment conscientiously.

When is pre-IV blood work ordered?

  • Patients are receiving higher dose IV bags: when the nutrients in your IV bag are very high, we need to guarantee, through blood work, that you have the enzymes you need in your body to metabolize the nutrients that are being administered.

  • When you have a history of clotting: if you could be at risk of excess blood clots, DVT (deep vein thrombosis), pulmonary embolism and/or stroke, we will complete blood work to measure your level of risk for clotting again. Knowing these numbers helps us determine if we can run your IV safely or allows us to modify your IV formulation to avoid risk.

  • If you are having an active autoimmune flare-up or if you have had a respiratory infection within one week of seeing us: we are aware that certain respiratory infections and the inflammation associated with an active autoimmune disease can increase your risk of IV complications. In these cases, we pre-test blood markers to assess risk and evaluate the status of your inflammation.

  • In treating patients with cancer: if you have or have had cancer and IV therapy is a treatment you wish to pursue, we will always do a pre-screening. This gives us a baseline of your overall health, ensures you can metabolize what we will be administering, assesses for possible deficiencies and allows us to monitor your progress.
